Differences and Indifferences

US V. THEM

We were born into a land of differences
Different were our names
Behaviors, languages, and beliefs
Even the food, weather, clothes
All different and distinct
We were taught to embrace them
And live with them
We learned to listen and learn
Understand and accept
And we grew up stronger
Differences were our opportunities
Curiosities were our windows
Acceptance made us open
Within those differences, we learned to be one

Newspapers were responsible
They wrote about what failed
They showed us what isn’t working
That helped us improve
That made us accountable
Police worked for the people
Politicians were not immune to the law
Governments answered to people
We weren’t perfect
But we were humans

Today we see
Cyclists killed by drivers
Pedestrians crushed by vehicles
Killers, rapists, scamsters, criminals
All walk free
Some are even garlanded and celebrated
We move on as if nothing happened
Newspapers write about greatness only
No one wants to hear what isn’t working
No one wants to know what should improve
All differences crushed
Only some ideas prevail
Others brushed under the carpet

No more differences
Be mainstream – that is the only way
“Or else..” is more prevalent
Than “let’s try”
We learned to kill the inner voices
We ignore the tiny prompts
We fear the differences
And are happy being indifferent
How long?
